Our past double-blind tastings have included Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, and Riesling. This year we’re putting Merlot to the test! Come join us on Tuesday, March 20th as we taste eight very special BC expressions of the Merlot grape. What’s a double-blind tasting? It’s where all the wines are wrapped in paper bags and poured in random order – even we, the organizers and pourers, will not know which wines are which. Why Merlot? One of the six noble Bordeaux grapes (along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Carménère, Malbec, and Petit Verdot), Merlot is one of the most widely planted grapes in the Okanagan. Often used as a blending grape with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot can, without a doubt, stand on its own! An earlier ripening grape, wines made from Merlot are rich but approachable due to their softer tannins. Because the fruit is relatively easy to ripen, it makes an ideal choice for the wineries to include in their repertoire! We’ve raided the BCWAS cellar and purchased a few of the top examples from every relevant provincial sub-appellation to ensure a broad representation of BC terroir. Award-winning wines from vintages new and old will include celebrated producers such as Burrowing Owl, Church & State, Painted Rock, and Poplar Grove, among others! If you’ve never been to a blind tasting before, why not make this your first one? It’s fun to think about what you’re seeing, smelling, and tasting, and why you like or don’t like what’s in the glass. We are holding this fabulous event at our NEW VENUE! We are super excited to announce that we have found a new home-base for the society – the iconic Water Street Cafe in Gastown! Located right across the street from the steam clock in Gastown, the Water Street Cafe has been a Vancouver landmark since 1988. Our tasting room is upstairs in the restaurant, with beautiful views overlooking historic Gastown. Please join us and help celebrate our new location!
