Be one of the lucky people on the 13th annual BCWAS Bus Tour this September! This year, we’re visiting West Kelowna: so many new wineries have opened since our last visit there that we are really looking forward to visiting the area again! Highlights will include a lunch at Quails’ Gate Winery’s Old Vines Restaurant, a dinner at Blu Saffron Bistro at Volcanic Hills Estate Winery, and a catered lunch at Mt. Boucherie Estate Winery. All of our destinations have lovely vineyard and/or lake views. Each winery is also doing a special tasting just for us! When we said we were coming to visit, each winery offered to do something fun – and they’re all different. Truly, the BC wineries know just how special you all are! We’ll be based at the Best Western Plus Wine Country Hotel in West Kelowna (NOT the Best Western on Hwy 97 in Kelowna). We’ve reserved a block of rooms, and several keeners have already booked! Our nightly rate is $169, and this includes breakfast. Hotel amenities include restaurant, pool (with waterslide!), hot tub, gym, business centre, and free WiFi. To reserve, click https://www.bestwestern.com/en_US/reservations/groups.html and use Group ID 5F3DE5P5 to get the special rate. Please note: transportation to/from the Okanagan and accommodation is not included in the tour price, so please make your own arrangements. You don’t have to stay at the Best Western if you have an alternative, but please make sure you are there on time each morning. As always, we recommend that you stay over Sunday night rather than driving back to Vancouver after a long day of wine tasting. Cost is $395 (Members only) Our tour includes two gourmet lunches and a multi-course dinner, all paired with wines. Please let us know in advance if you have allergy concerns. If this is your first bus tour, you’re in for some real fun, not only visiting the wineries, but getting to know your fellow BCWAS members as well. If you’ve been on a bus tour with us before, we’re looking forward to spending some time with you again. See you in September! The BCWAS is delighted to announce our first winemaker’s dinner of 2018! For this event, we’ll be tasting the fabulous wines from Bench 1775, located in picturesque Naramata. The name comes from the address – 1775 Naramata Road. The winery team is led by Viticulturalist/Winemaker/GM Valeria Tait, with support from Alain Sutre, the famous Bordeaux wine consultant. Formerly known as Soaring Eagle, the winery was re-named in 2013. Val came on board in 2014, and their reputation has continued to grow. The winery makes so many delicious wines, including Chardonnay, Viognier, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat, Merlot, Syrah, Malbec, sparkling and dessert wines, that we had a hard time choosing what to serve with our dinner! Make sure you include a stop there on your next Okanagan trip – you will love the wines, the view, and the food from their bistro, all of which can be enjoyed from their lovely patio. The Water St. Cafe has a special place in Vancouver history. Originally the Edwards Hotel, it was built in 1906, and has fed and sheltered people ever since. In the 1980s it was a restaurant called Brasserie de L’Horloge. Horloge is French for clock, a nod to the famous Steam Clock directly across the street. It was purchased by Dominique Sabatino in 1988, who renamed it the Water St. Cafe. After 30 years, Dominique sold last fall to Eli Brennan and Alan Tse, who are determined to keep the café’s iconic status. Your Society is lucky enough to have landed here as our home for our regular tastings, and this will be our first winemaker’s dinner. The Chef at the Water Street Cafe has crafted a menu especially for us which looks fabulous!
And just to sweeten the pot - we’ll be having a draw for a 5-course dinner at the Water Street Cafe with wine pairing for two! Moraine is a family-owned winery located on the lovely Naramata Bench. Established in 2011, Moraine is proving to be a real gem in the BC wine industry. Producing high quality wines with great value, Moraine’s wines are definitely worth getting to know better. Their New Zealand-trained winemaker, Jacqueline Kemp, was brought on board in 2012; under her experienced tutelage, Moraine’s wines are garnering some impressive accolades. The Moraine Riesling is one of the most awarded wines in the province and makes them the only BC winery to win a Platinum Award at the Wine Press Northwest Platinum Competition. Their Pinot Noir won one of the three Double Gold medals awarded at the 2015 International Pinot Challenge, pitted against numerous other wineries from Canada, the US, and around the world.
