We‘ve been working diligently on this upcoming event for quite some time and we are pleased to invite you to attend BCWAS‘ “First Ever” Wine Brunch. Steve approached numerous restaurants to get this concept going and, with the help of Marian, we finalized an arrangement to host a Saturday Wine Brunch at Cuchillo Restaurant in Vancouver‘s Gastown. Read below as we tell you a bit about the Chef/Owner Stuart Irving and the incredible menu that was selected to titillate your palate on a Saturday afternoon. “Cuchillo‘s dishes are more my personality, which is to say they are a little edgier,” Stuart explains. Drawing on his passion for Latin-inspired cuisine, Stuart's bold and savoury take on classic south-of-the-border dishes was influenced in part by his marriage to a Mexican woman. "We traveled through Central and South America and I just fell in love with Latino food," he says simply. Since this is a first, your arrival beverage will feature Cuchillo‘s well-known “Margarita”. Yes, you read this right, a Margarita, with all its traditional ingredients, will be served at our wine brunch! When we do “First Ever” events, we allow ourselves liberties to go a bit “outside the box” and this featured drink has been selected to set the mood and get you all in the spirit… so to speak. We also challenged ourselves to look at the menu and select, from our BCWAS cellar, wines to pair exceptionally well with the diverse dishes served. Michael's philosophy is to treat the grapes gently and with respect in order to produce complex, age-worthy wines that showcase the very best expression of the Similkameen Valley terroir. Michael was originally trained in Theoretical Physics. He also spent 14 years as a successful investment manager in Canada, the USA, and Europe. It was during his years living in Europe that Michael decided to turn his life-long obsession with wine into his day job.
In addition to our 2009-2015 vertical, Michael will be bringing the 2020 "Capella" Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon blend and a new 2020 Chardonnay for us to enjoy. He has also promised to bring an exciting, not yet released, bonus wine: we'll leave this for you to be pleasantly surprised at this iconic event.

We are honoured to welcome you back with one of our most sought-after events, a ten-year vertical tasting! Our featured winery for this event is Fairview Cellars, a boutique winery located on the Reed Creek alluvial fan at the north end of the benches of the Golden Mile. Situated off the second tee of the Fairview Mountain Golf Course on the southwest corner of Oliver, Fairview Cellars is well known for some of the Okanagan's best bold red wines.
The wine collected by our expert Cellarmasters over the years for this ten-year vertical is none other than The Bear's Meritage, otherwise known as THE BEAR. In front of you, at this vertical tasting, expect to savour ten of these epic, age-worthy red blends from 2005 to 2014. Since many BCWAS members are very well acquainted with Fairview Cellars' Proprietor Bill Eggert, known by some as the "Iconoclast Winemaker" among top Okanagan wine producers, we are certainly in for an evening of colourful commentary from Bill. Sign up soon to reserve your seat!

You are not seeing things, the BCWAS is back in action after 18 long months of COVID-imposed lockdown and social distancing. We are optimistic that Stage 4 of the provincial re-opening will take place as scheduled in September, and are very happy to welcome all our healthy and happy members to a celebratory vertical tasting. The Society encourages all members who are able to do so to get vaccinated before the event in the interests of safety - you've got just enough time for two doses! This latest tasting in our ongoing series of (nearly) annual verticals will feature the flagship wine of Poplar Grove, "The Legacy". This Bordeaux-inspired red blend has been produced since at least 2004: we know this because that is when our ten year vertical begins! These meticulously aged bottles represent the finest grapes farmed by Poplar Grove from 2004 to 2013, and often bottled-aged at the winery for two years before release. Needless to say the BCWAS has taken up the mantle from Poplar Grove and continued that bottle aging for a spectacularly long time. Not only does The Legacy regularly receive provincial and national acclaim, but in recent years there has been international recognition of Poplar Grove's winemaking: the 2016 vintage just received a Gold Medal (96 points) from the Decanter World Wine Awards. The wine has certainly grown and changed over time, as the vineyards have matured and expanded in size and scope, with more rare varieties such as Malbec and Petit Verdot added in later years to the more traditional Cabernet-Merlot blend. Don't worry, we have all the details available for each vintage, to ensure you know exactly what you're tasting from each glass! Welcome back fellow oenophiles, we look forward to seeing you soon.
