It's hard to believe November is nearly over, and the holiday season is fast approaching! The BCWAS welcomes all members and their guests to join a festive social gathering in which to celebrate and wish each other well. Like our annual AGM, this will be a BYOB event - a chance to share a great BC wine you picked up this year! The Society will be providing a selection of cheese & charcuterie, plus hot and cold hors d'oeuvres for everyone to enjoy. Please bring a wine glass if possible, but there will be spares available for those unable to do so.
Even better, we have reached into the Society cellar, and our own Cellarmaster has generously donated from his collection, to offer a dozen exciting door prizes - odds are better than 1 in 4! We've also put together an incredible silent auction full of spectacular gift items (for you or your loved ones), including vintage BC Wines and vertical collections from as far back as 2006, with reserve prices starting below original value! A dozen auction items include the following packages: Sandhill Small Lots "Two" 2006, 2007, & 2008; Mission Hill 2008 Compendium & Quatrain; Fairview Cellars 2010 & 2011 The Bear; Culmina Hypothesis 2011, 2012, & 2013; Blue Mountain 2014 Reserve Pinot Gris & Pinot Noir; and Meyer McLean Creek Pinot Noir 2014, 2015, & 2016.
Date: Friday, December 7th
Time: 6:30-9:30pm drop-in, but door prizes are announced every ten minutes beginning at 7pm!
Place: 503 West 16th Avenue, Vancouver (at the intersection of Cambie Street)
Directions: The Holiday Social will be held in the same location as our recent AGM, in the Amenity Room of our Cellarmaster's condominium. Attached is a map showing how to find the Amenity Room via the garden courtyard; there will also be a BCWAS member in the building lobby to let you in there. The #15 bus stops on Cambie at 16th Avenue (travels north-south along Cambie from False Creek to Marine Drive and vice versa), and the #33 bus stops in front of the building on 16th Avenue (travels east-west between UBC and 29th Avenue Skytrain Station); transit stops are marked on the map.
Price: Only $15 at the door for all members and their guests! Please RSVP to info@bcwas.org so we know how many to expect - the more the merrier!

The BCWAS is delighted to announce our 2018 fall dinner! We are lucky enough to be able to enjoy two of our favourites together – the delicious wines of Fairview Cellars and the also-delicious food of Provence Marinaside.
Fairview Cellars is the culmination of a life long quest of Bill Eggert’s to own and operate his own winery. The 10-acre property, located adjacent to the first green of the Fairview Mountain Golf Course, was purchased by Bill in 1989. The vineyard was started in 1993, and the first commercial vintage was in 1997. Half the property was planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, and most of the rest is Cabernet Franc and Merlot. One row of Syrah and one row of Petit Verdot were added later, and Sauvignon Blanc was planted in 2007.
Bill will be joining us, and – let your inner wine geek celebrate - he’ll be bringing along some very cool wines, including the 2007 Sauvignon Blanc, 2012 Two Hoots Red Blend under two different screwcap closures, and the 2005 Cabernet Franc and the 2004 Bear Meritage under both cork and screwcap.

BLUE MOUNTAIN BY THE SEA: A 10-year vertical tasting of the award-winning Blue Mountain Reserve Pinot Noir led by Christie Mavety of Blue Mountain.
The Society has been diligently cellaring this delicious, benchmark Pinot Noir for 10 years and we are delighted to be able to share these wines with you. The ten-year vertical will include the 2006 to 2015 vintages. Arrive at the False Creek Yacht Club and enjoy a cold glass of Blue Mountain’s Rose Brut to prepare your palate for an evening of delightful surprises. The bubbly is crisp, refreshing, and will be setting off the evening in style. Don’t miss out on what is sure to be a spectacular event! Get your tickets early for this unique Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars event: as with all vertical tastings, there is a cap for attendance at this event and tickets will go fast! This tasting is currently open to members only. |
Started by Jane and Ian Mavety in 1971, Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars has always been a family operation. For 21 years the Mavetys supplied premium grapes to commercial wineries when finally, the allure of producing quality wines inspired them to craft their own label in 1991. Today, on their 31-hectare estate, they make limited quantities of complex wines from noble varietals including Pinot Noir, Gamay Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, and Chardonnay -- the same varietals found in the Champagne, Burgundy, and Alsace regions of France. In the vineyard, methods favor low crop yields to concentrate and intensify flavours. While using modern equipment in the winery, wine-making is respectful of traditional methods. |
Growing up on the estate, it was natural for Christie Mavety to work in the vineyard, in the plant nursery, and in the winery cellar during her high school years as a summer job. During those years she became familiar with the operation of the vineyards and as well as the processing of the grapes from harvest to bottling. Christie now works at the management level in Sales & Marketing, and we are very pleased to have her with us at this tasting.
